Evan Scheidet: a.k.a. Big E
ASE certified Master Mechanic Evan Scheidet starts each day with a cup of coffee in one hand and a copy of Engine Builder Magazine in the other.
His interest in engines was sparked at the age of 5 when he took apart the Briggs & Stratton engine his grandfather gave him, and then put it back together. In his teen years, Evan was repairing go karts, small engines, dirt bikes and classic cars. He's been working on Volkswagens since he was just thirteen years old, that's over 30 years!
Evan's years of on-the-job experience include working on heavy equipment maintenance, metal fabrication, hydraulic systems, power equipment, vehicle diagnostics, electrical, brakes, front ends, engines and drivetrains, plus industrial processing and milling machine repairs.
Over the years Evan has built engines for most of his own vehicles; including the V-8 for his blue '69 Ford F-100, the 2276cc dry sump race engine in his '73 Super Beetle hill climb car, and Herman: the '64 Mercedes hot rod in which he installed a Ford 302 V8.
Evan takes an honest approach to his business. Whether its cylinder head repair or fabricating obsolete parts, Evan maintains the highest quality standards possible – partly due to his own in-house custom machine shop.

The Shop at Big E’s Garage
Evan Scheidet opened Big E’s Garage in 2008 as an auto and motorcycle repair shop. In 2010, he bought machine shop equipment to control the quality of the work he was sending out; he wanted the jobs done right and knew he could do it better if he did it himself. Engine machining jobs soon became steady work with industrial diesel, pulling tractors, and classic American and European engines of all sizes. He realizes now he is doing what he has always dreamed of doing as a kid, machine stuff and build engines for fun.
Big E's engine machine shop uses old school machines and tools to keep classic vehicles alive and running. Today, Evan specializes in vintage automotive repair and modification. He has 30+ years of experience working on air-cooled VW's, and is known for his precise attention to detail.
Big E's is equipped with repair manuals and tools dating back to the 40's to work on Chevy, Ford, Volkswagen, Jeep, Corvair, Desoto, Opel, Alfa Romeo and Triumph. He fabricates obsolete parts, and his own tools, in-house.

Big E's In-House Projects
Award Winning 1973 VW Super Beetle
Evan won the coveted Wezil award from the Killington Sports Car Club for an immaculate build of his 1973 VW Super Beetle hill climb race car.
1969 Ford F-100 Engine Rebuild
Evan adopted this '69 F-100 after his beloved '63 Impala was t-boned. Evan completely rebuilt the Ford's engine in his machine shop.
Herman, the 1964 Mercedes, modified to fit a Ford V-8
Initially Evan was shooed away by this Benz' late owner, named Herman. Evan had been admiring the car through a barn window.
Eventually, Evan was able to acquire it, and later modified it with a custom-built Ford 302 V8 motor. Evan assumes Herman is rolling over in his grave.
